This Smoked French Onion Dip is a creamy, savory appetizer that’s packed with rich, smoky flavor. Slow-cooked onions bring natural sweetness, while cream cheese and sour cream make it irresistibly smooth. Finished with apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, and a touch of garlic, this dip is the perfect balance of tangy and smoky. Whether you use a smoker for that authentic backyard BBQ taste or roast your onions in the oven, this dip will be the star of your next gathering. Serve it chilled with chips, crackers, or fresh veggies!
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 onions, cut in half
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 2 tbsp Chef Select Cooking Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Chopped chives, for garnish (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
- Peel and cut the onions in half. Line a tray with foil, coat with olive oil, and place the onion halves sliced side down. Brush the tops with remaining oil.
- Place the tray in your smoker at 250°F (120°C) and cook for 2–3 hours, until the onions are fully tender. If you don’t have a smoker, you can replicate this in the oven at the same temperature until softened and lightly caramelized.
- Remove the onions and let them cool for 15–20 minutes. Peel off and discard any papery outer layers, then dice the onions into small pieces.
- In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream, cream cheese, and apple cider vinegar until smooth.
- Fold in the chopped onions. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika, adjusting to taste.
- Cover and refrigerate for 1–2 hours to let flavors meld.
- Top with fresh chives (optional), plate up with chips or veggies, and enjoy!
