INGREDIENTS
- 1 lb. mild ground Italian sausage
- 16 oz. ziti rigati pasta
- 1 24 oz. jar Botticelli Tomato & Parmigiano Reggiano Pasta Sauce
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 15 oz. whole milk ricotta cheese
- 1 cup shredded parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp. dried Italian seasoning
- 1 tsp. dried basil
- 2 tbsp. Botticelli Frying Olive Oil
- salt and pepper to taste
PREPARATION
Preheat your oven to 375F.
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and add the pasta. Strain when the pasta reaches al dente and set aside.
In a 9x13 in. oval baking dish, spread a spoonful of pasta sauce to coat the bottom and set aside.
In a large sauté pan over medium-high heat, drizzle the olive oil and place the ground sausage. As it begins cooking, start breaking up the meat into smaller pieces. Keep sautéing until well browned. Drain any excess oil and set aside once it has fully cooked
In a large mixing bowl, add 2 cups of mozzarella cheese, ricotta, ½ a cup of parmesan, egg, Italian seasoning, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
Pour your pasta, sauce, and browned sausage into the bowl and mix well to evenly combine and coat. Ensure to gently stir to avoid your pasta breaking.
Pour your pasta mixture into the baking dish and spread it out to create an even layer. Top your pasta with the remaining mozzarella and parmesan cheese and bake for 10 – 15 minutes or until the cheesy goodness is bubbly and beginning to brown.
Remove from the oven and let stand for 5-10 minutes. Top with fresh basil and serve!
